Basics: Primers

I once told my aunt about primers and she laughed at me, asking me exactly what kind of makeup I’m using that I would need to prime my face. I first started using primers a few years ago with my first Urban Decay Primer Potion, just for the eyes. I got the more gold Sin type, since I liked the shimmer it had. Then I tried Studio Gear’s Tinted Eyeshadow primer which was a bit more liquid. Of course there’s also Elf’s eye primer which looks so tinted I once mistook it for a concealer. When I finally started using face primers I started with Elf’s Mineral Primer and Bare Escentuals Prime Time. I liked the oily but not greasy feel of the BE primer but since I have oily skin I purchased the version for oily skin. It was more like a lotion and I wasn’t very happy with it, but I still use it. I have deluxe samples of Perfect & Poreless by Too Faced, Smashbox’s Face Primer samples, Shadow Insurance Primer by Too Faced and the Lip Insurance by Too Faced. I think the Lip Insurance is a bit much and I certainly won’t be getting mascara primer. That’s pretty much my short history with primers.

There’s more high end primers I intend on trying out but they’ll be face or shadow primers. You certainly don’t have to spend a lot of money on primers since they’re more common place now that even drug store brands offer primers. They can range from the elf liners that start at a few dollars to the prestige brands that average $30-$40. There are certainly samples out there you can try, especially for the more expensive varieties. From my own personal experience they do work. They prep your face and make products you use last longer. Eyeshadows are more vibrant and true to color when applied over primer. So I suppose what my aunt said in the beginning is true. It’s like paint primer, if you spend time cleaning and moisturizing your face, why don’t you ensure you have a nice clean surface to apply your product? It’s definitely a worth while investment.

Old Navy Stuff & Save plus Pop Pants

I’ve done some interesting shopping today. I’ve purchased my first pair of super skinny jeans. And it’s a bit scary. I’m not what you’d call a skinny jeans kinda girl, thanks in part to my huge calves but I love the feel of the super skinny pop jeans from Old Navy and they were on sale so I bought my first pair. I didn’t go too crazy mind you because I don’t like the corduroy ones, or the dot ones, or the brightly colored ones so I stayed pretty tame by just getting the denim version. I plan on wearing them with my adoraboots, also from Old Navy. While at the store I also purchased the cute Santa’s Little Helper long sleeve shirt. I won’t be wearing it all together but they’re cute pieces. Now I’ve got to summon up the courage to wear the skinny jeans outside lol!

Last weekend during the Black Friday sales Ikea had a special going on their stuffed animals. It was kinda funny seeing all these people walking around with giant stuffed bears, seals, elephants and dogs. It was too cute. Well I would have been cute too had they not run out of the awesomest stuffed animal they had- the shark! So when I was checking out today I saw they had restocked them and I made sure to grab one before they were all gone. It’s not a small shark either, it’s about 3 feet long and almost like a body pillow.

Elf & VS Arrival

I’m trying a new app for my photos today- Diptic, it has fewer effects than Fuzel Pro which I typically use but it’s great for what it’s for.

Now for today’s stuff- I was expecting 2 packages today from elf and from Victoria’s Secret. The first to arrive was my elf shipment and when I opened it up I was surprised at how full it was, I almost thought they had mistakenly sent me too much stuff and then I recalled the promotion they had when I ordered. Besides having a 50% sale on the studio line, they were giving away a free 12 brush set. It’s the ones with the white handles. In this set I received one each of the:
*Total Face Brush
*Foundation Brush
*Bronzing Brush
*Eyelash & Brow Wand
*Brow Comb & Brush
*Blending Eye Brush
*Eyeshadow Brush
*Smudge Eye Sponge
*Eyeliner Brush (Push Brush)
*Defining Eye Brush
*Concealer Brush
*Lip Defining Brush

Here’s what I ordered from elf:
*Eye Contour Brush
*Mineral Powder Brush
*Small Tapered Brush
*Retractable Lip Brush
*Eyeshadow ‘C’ Brush
*Waterproof Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara
*Eye Refresh
*Daily Moisture Stick
*Waterproof Eyeliner Crayon in Black

Not a bad haul if I do say so myself, considering the items I got for free. I did buy some of these same brushes last month for half price, and some I have never had. I love the sturdier style of the studio brushes, so I’m definitely happy I purchased those. The four non brushes I did purchase I did so out of curiosity, the eye refresher I had been wanting for awhile but it was always sold out, the eyeliner crayon was a new item, the moisture stick was an impulse buy since I’d never tried a moisture stick, and finally the mascara was something I’ve been needing. I rarely use mascara but lately I’ve been noticing how powdery they get sometimes after applying my eye makeup so I’ve been adding a quick layer or two.

The second thing to arrive today was the Victoria’s Secret fragrance that I purchased that was on sale last week. There’s nothing more to say about it except that its awesome and it’s finally mine!

Cat Basket Time!

Every year around this time, we being out the baskets for the kitties, clearing a space for them near the window. It kinda reminds me of the story of Goldilocks and how the three bears have 3 beds. We have 1 big basket, 1 medium basket and 1 small basket. The big one is supposed to be for our biggest cat (Jack), middle for the middle cat (Sophie) and the small for the smallest cat (but oldest Ella). That’s never how it works out though, since it seems this year Ella and Jack are fighting for the medium basket, and then Jack and Sophie are fighting for the smallest basket. Or Jack tries to cuddle with whoever is in the big basket and gets beaten up. Lol poor Jack!

Chuao Potato Chip ChocoPod

I got this ChocoPod from Chuao in my last Birchbox and I decided to give it a try. I had originally given it to my brother but he never got around to trying it out. I was sitting on the couch snacking and it caught my eye. The packaging is cute, and once I opened it, I was surprised at how the chocolate looked. I hadn’t expected an actual big piece of chocolate- for some reason I expected something a little more rustic, maybe? Perhaps the image of potato chips covered in chocolate was what I had in mind.

The chocolate was definitely a good quality chocolate- not overly sweet but I was disappointed with the potato chips. If you just have me this candy and expected me to guess what was in it, I never would have said potato chips. There were crispy bits but I probably would have guessed that it was a fancy Crunch bar. There wasn’t any real salty flavor to the bar, just a bit of crunchiness. Perhaps the pieces were just too small or my expectations were ruined by the packaging. I have heard that Chuao has some interesting flavors but as for this one, I think it was a real dud. Good chocolate but that’s about it.

Leave me alone, I wanna sleep!

Hello Black Friday! Today just might be a 3 or 4 cups of coffee/Pepsi day. I’m to blame for most of it of course- I agreed to work an extended shift at my first job so instead of working from 1:30 to 5:30 I’m now working from 9:45 to 5:45, then I’m heading to my second job to work from 6:15 to 3:00 am. I think. I’m not 100% sure what time my shift ends. I’m not even sure what shift I’m working on Saturday besides my noon to 4 at the first job. I haven’t actually been to my second job this whole week so my paycheck is bound to suck. At least I’ve already got my schedule for next week and its not too bad! I don’t even have to trade shifts or anything! I’ll let you know if I survive this day!

Thanks what? Happy Gray Thursday!

I’m not even going to mention the holiday that wasn’t for me this year. Basically my plans were ruined by work since my family is not local. So my parents left around noon, which is when I got out of bed. I was texting my friend who works at my second job with me and she mentioned that she was sent home since it was so slow! I hadn’t heard otherwise from work so I lazied about the house and then got ready for work. An hour before I was to show up- my phone rings and its work. They cancelled my shift. So basically my family was all gathered together and I was at home- an hour and a half away and they cancel my only reason for not being able to make it. To say I was pissed, was a gross understatement.

Twilight is Over! Plus Cashmere Glow & Truck Stop Diners

Happy Birthday Dad! So it was my dad’s birthday and so what did we do? Well mom and I went to see Breaking Dawn part 2. I’m so sad the series is over but I’m happy with how it ended. The twist at the end was pretty funny.

Then afterwards we stopped in at Bath & Body Works to check out this new fragrance they’ve been emailing me about. I thought it was kind of meh, and their VIP bag? Meh as well. I mean you have to spend $40 and then you get to pay $20 more for a tote bag with stuff. It’s a good deal for $20 but still you’re actually having to pay $60 for it all. If you’re catching up with their scents or getting a ton of stuff they say you can combine their $10 off $30 coupon and the buy one get one free coupon I think. That’s a lot of freaking body sprays, lotions, and other smelly things. If that’s all you’re giving away for Christmas or you’re stocking up- that’s great but if you’re like me and already have one of everything, it’s kind of a waste. Perhaps maybe they should rethink this deal and allow you to choose the products to put into your bag, that’d be a better option for me. Just saying.

I did pick up a set using the buy one, get one free coupon. I chose Cashmere Glow and this is how they describe it on their site:

Top Notes: Bergamot, Golden Peach, Pink Guava, Exotic Berries, Gilded Apricot
Mid Notes: Glowing Muguet Petals, Mimosa, Fluffy Peony, Fresh Jasmine
Dry Notes: Shimmering Vanilla, Dulce De Leche, Sandalwood, Cashmere Musk
Aloe conditions and nourishes skin

Call me simple but wtf is a Gilded Apricot??

From that description I never would have chosen it since I tend to pick more floral fragrances like Moonlit Path but this has a light floral scent with a hint of sweet fruitiness. I don’t really even like to eat a lot of fruit much less wear it, but this was great.

So after the movie and shopping we headed home to pick up my brother and dad so we could go out to dinner. We chose to go to one of my favorite places- the truck stop! Yes, I love the truck stop diner, it’s called the Silver Skillet and its open 24 Hours, great for a family like mine that seems to be up all hours of the night. They have a lot of comfort food, awesome breakfast platters and the service is friendly. We all had steaks, except for mom who had the roast beef, I think it was too much for me and I almost wish I had opted for the pasta. Maybe next time. I think it was all a little too much for us because we came home with like 4 containers of left overs. It was yummy as usual!

After dinner we had to stop by the store to pick up some stuff my parents would bring to Thanksgiving dinner, so we stopped by Target and I ended up buying a planner for next year. I’m sure I’ll get tons of use out of it, considering how crazy my schedule has gotten but I can’t use it right away so that’s a boo!
