Ipsy (My Glam Bag) Reveal

I’m still fairly new to the world of Subscription Beauty Boxes but I’m already on my 2nd one. Last month I posted about how disappointed I was with my Birchbox and I subsequently cancelled my subscription. I signed up for Ipsy that day and I’m so relieved I did. I received by Ipsy bag today, 2 days ahead of schedule and I’m so happy with what I received. One of the main differences between my Birchbox and Ipsy bags is that you get the same items in ALL of the bags. With a few exceptions- I mean I received a different shade of the Nyx pigments than a few of the people’s videos that I viewed on YouTube. So what exactly did I receive in my Ipsy bag?

*Metallic Grey makeup bag (of course)
*1 Full Size Nyx Pearl Pigment
*1 Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner Mini in Zero
*2 Mirabella Eye & Face Primers (a mistake I’m sure)
*1 MAI Couture Booklet of Highlighting Papers (25 sheets)
*1 Be A Bombshell Lipgloss in Hot Mess

So I got basically 7 items, all of which are deluxe if not full sized items. There was no food, perfume samples, foil packs or fashion tape. Don’t get me wrong I love perfume but I don’t need a sample of perfume every month. So far this is a wonderful start for Ipsy. We’ll see how they do next month!

Chuao Potato Chip ChocoPod

I got this ChocoPod from Chuao in my last Birchbox and I decided to give it a try. I had originally given it to my brother but he never got around to trying it out. I was sitting on the couch snacking and it caught my eye. The packaging is cute, and once I opened it, I was surprised at how the chocolate looked. I hadn’t expected an actual big piece of chocolate- for some reason I expected something a little more rustic, maybe? Perhaps the image of potato chips covered in chocolate was what I had in mind.

The chocolate was definitely a good quality chocolate- not overly sweet but I was disappointed with the potato chips. If you just have me this candy and expected me to guess what was in it, I never would have said potato chips. There were crispy bits but I probably would have guessed that it was a fancy Crunch bar. There wasn’t any real salty flavor to the bar, just a bit of crunchiness. Perhaps the pieces were just too small or my expectations were ruined by the packaging. I have heard that Chuao has some interesting flavors but as for this one, I think it was a real dud. Good chocolate but that’s about it.

November Birchbox

There was some weirdness going on with my Birchbox or the post office because I was tracking the package and it went from NJ to the Bay Area, then up to my city (Sacramento) then back down to the Bay Area then it was delivered. So I didn’t know when to expect it. Today when I came home from work, it was in my mailbox waiting for me- so yay! As happy as I was to get mail, I was somewhat iffy about what I got in my Birchbox. Let me just tell you what I got:

*Atelier Cologne | Rose Anonyme Cologne Absolue Full Size $75-$195
*Miracle Skin Transformer | Vanish Instant Imperfection Corrector Full Size $58
*Oscar Blandi | Pronto Texture & Volume Spray Full Size $25
*Stila | All Over Shimmer Luminizer Full Size $20
Lifestyle Extra-
*Chuao Chocolatier | Assorted ChocoPod (Mine was in Potato Chip) Full Size $7.95/ 7 Pack

So now that I’ve covered that let’s get to the pros and cons.

Pros: I love the Stila Illumnizer & I’m super excited to try the Imperfection Corrector- those products are things I actually want to try and the Stila Illumnizer had the perfect amount of shine to it, without being too sparkly.
Cons: Perfume again. This is my 3rd Birchbox now and it’s the 3rd box to have a perfume sample. Not that I don’t love perfume, I just try not to have so much of it, and having recently found Flower by Kenzo & finally purchasing VS Angel- I think I’m covered in the perfume section. I would have preferred to try the serum that was shown on the preview video since it has a fragrance and it seems to be more than just a nice scent. I need something for moisturizing my hands during this time of year. Also, while the Oscar Blandi product is a nice deluxe sample size I really don’t focus too much on my hair, that may be partially my fault since I have to alter my profile. I still have yet to use the volumizing product I received in my very first Birchbox. Perhaps I’ve also seen to many unboxing videos but everyone seems to have received the fiber lash mascara, I was hoping to get that so I could finally try false fiber mascara. A long time ago when I lived in Japan, I had purchased a product with false fibers and I loved it. It just recently caught on in the past few years here and I’ve yet to try the newer versions.

So with all that being said- I believe I’m ready to cancel my Birchbox subscription and try another service. I’ve seen a few vids and I think I’m gonna try out Ipsy. They used to be knows as My Glam Bag, I think. I’ll probably try it for 3 months as well and then maybe make the leap to try Glossy Box, unless I’m feeling a little adventurous tonight and get both!

Birchbox & Avenue

My Birchbox finally came when I checked the mail today and I was pleasantly surprised to find it was one of the Goop collaboration boxes. I’ve been looking over some of the reviews on YouTube and I wasn’t sure if I’d be happy with this months box. So let me first tell you what I received:

1. Essie nail polish in the color ‘Fair Game’, this was a full size product and retails for $8
2. Jouer Lip Enhancer, small sample retail for full size is $14
3. (Malin+Goetz) vitamin b5 body moisturizer, this is a deluxe sample, retail price is $38
4. Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum, 2 small packets, retail price $20-$40
5. Lifestyle Extra– Kusmi Tea, Detox and Euphoria Tea- retail price $21.95
6. Beauty Extra (Malin+Goetz) Grapefruit Face Cleanser, full size retails for $30

Overall I’m pretty happy with my Birchbox this month, I hadn’t made a preference selection between the Goop picks box or the normal transformation themed box. From the reviews I’ve seen they included at least one or two food items. Not that food items are a bad thing but I’d prefer to have something new. The Essie nail polish I received doesn’t have a very descriptive name but it is a silver metallic color. I’m familiar with this brand but at $8 a bottle I would not have bought this on my own. The Jouer lip treatment was interesting, I tried it on and was pleased to find that the texture wasn’t oily and it had no smell. At least to me it doesn’t. I don’t know if I’d pay $14 for it when I just use Carmex every day and get the same sort of results, guess I’m not fancy but I will try it out for a few days. I just tried the (Malin+Goetz) b5 moisturizer on my hands and I love the smell. I believe it’s grapefruit, I may just be thinking that because my other product from them also has grapefruit. It had an almost too thick feel to it and its not greasy, maybe I didn’t apply enough of it because it absorbed pretty quickly into my skin. I think I like it. Those are the only two products I’ve tried so far, the Essie I will probably try and if I don’t like it, I can give it to one of my aunts. The supergoop and face cleanser I will try when I’m actually going to spend out in the sun, and the tea I just gave to my brother.

My Birchbox arrived!

I was expecting this a little sooner but I finally got my September Birchbox and I am pretty happy with what I received. I was expecting the sample from Jouer and the nail polish, but one thing I was hoping for an didn’t get was the tea. It wasn’t even for me, I wanted to have my lil bro try it.

So here’s what I got this month:
•Color Club- Birchbox Custom Polish in the shade ‘Insta-That!’
•Jouer- Matte Moisture Tint in Hazel (Good color!)
•Kate Spade- Twirl Perfume sample
•Skin, An Apothecary- Soy Body Whip in Poppy (Excellent sample size!)
•Twistband- Birchbox custom lace hair tie-(Mine is orange-y)

Lifestyle Extra:
•Hollywood Fashion Secrets-Fashion Tape (yes tape! Wtf?!)
So here’s what I think of my Birchbox- overall I’m pretty happy with what I received this month. I’m trying out this beauty box service for 6 months, then I may or may not move onto Glossy Box. In case you aren’t familiar with these services, basically it’s a subscription service and they provide you with a box of samples- large samples you can use over a month, not the little drop sized ones they give you in the store. So back to my review- I could easily say I’m happy with at least half of the items I received. The nail polish was a color I could definitely see myself using, the large deluxe sized sample of the Soy Body Whip was wonderful and the product itself was very thick, and the scent was great. I’ve heard alot of good things about Jouer and I’m very pleased I got a product that was in a good shade for me. The moisturizer itself has a slight shimmer to it, but it’s pretty minimal, it’s workable. The twistband I’m not so sure about because it didn’t seem very durable and it’s something that I could possibly even make on my own. I know they include this product in alot of their boxes but I could have done without it. The Kate Spade Twirl perfume sample smelled nice, very floral and something I would totally consider purchasing, they listed the full size price as $18-$80 I think (I could be so wrong), maybe I’ll look it up on the site later. The huge disappointment of the box was the tape, I mean really tape??? I suppose I could find a use for these but I’ll probably just end up sticking them on my cat’s tail to mess with him. Or they’ll just end up at the bottom of my purse attached to like a bunch of pennies and lint. I honestly would have rather received the tea, or candy or whatever.
If you asked me to rate this box I’d give it a 3 out of 5. I got tape, that had to drag it down at least 1 star!
